Our structure

  • Board – The Board of Directors/Trustees is the grouping of people who are responsible for governing the Irish Cycling Campaign. The Board as a body does not play an active role in campaigning and other day-to-day matters, but retains oversight as necessary. Legally, ‘the buck stops’ with the Board. Read more.

  • Executive Committee – The Executive Committee is the group of people responsible for overseeing the Irish Cycling Campaign’s national advocacy function, management of finances, and internal workings that are not governance-specific, in order to ensure that the greatest possible impact can be made. Read more.

  • Action Groups – These are subcommittees of the Executive Committee that support the executive function of the organisation. Read more.

  • Members – individuals who ‘own’ the organisation, have voting rights and benefit from a number of other membership services. Read more.

  • Local Groups – groups within a defined geographical area (for example, a County) whose primary function is the promotion of cycling. Read more.

  • Thematic Groups – groups who are defined by the topic or area of interest, such as road safety, speed limits or diversity, rather than a geographic area. Read more.

  • Partners – organisations from any sector of society that we collaborate with. They do not have voting rights and their activities are not covered by our public liability insurance.  Examples include An Taisce, Cycling Without Age, Irish Environmental Network and Local Authorities.

  • Patrons – Patrons hold honorary roles and have no legal responsibilities.  Patrons are usually well-known and generally respected individuals who can raise the profile and credibility of the organisation by lending their name to it. Our current patron is Prof. Donal O’Shea (UCD / St. Vincent’s University Hospital), a well-known consultant endocrinologist specialising in obesity.

  • Staff – We are all volunteers, with the exception of our National Cycling Coordinator, Dr. Damien Ó Tuama (pictured below).

Damien has held the National Cycling Coordinator post since 2013, a position shared with An Taisce. His current focus is in supporting Irish Cycling Campaign’s countrywide network of Local Groups and advancing the goals of our strategy. He worked in the transportation space for over 20 years, and completed his doctoral research exploring transitions in mobility systems in 2015 (in Trinity College Dublin).

Damien is currently also an Evaluator and Steering Committee member for research projects under the EPA Research Programme Annual Call under the pillars of Climate and Sustainability. He spent five years on the Board of the European Cyclists’ Federation (2016-2021) and is currently a member of its Nomination Committee. In 2020 he was appointed to the Board of Transport Infrastructure Ireland following a Public Appointments Service process, and was reappointed for a further three year term in 2023. Damien enjoys music, gigs, DIY and adventures!
